Critical Illness Cover
Critical illness protection can be added to level term assurance, decreasing term assurance, family income benefit and in some very rare circumstances, whole of life policies - although it is normal not to do this. It is worth pointing out right away that critical illness cover is very different from terminal illness cover which is usually added to any normal term policy (please see terminal illness explanation).
Critical illness cover will pay out upon diagnosis of a critical illness and not upon death; in fact you may survive for many, many years afterwards and still benefit from the pay-out on the policy. Because of the advances in medical technology more and more people are surviving critical illnesses these days (heart attack, cancer, stroke etc.) so as a result critical illness plans are typically around 4-5 times more expensive than life only term policies as you are much more likely to claim on this type of cover.
Just ask yourself this question, how many people do you know who have had a critical illness, probably quite a few right? There are many different factors to consider when choosing the right critical illness plan as each provider will cover different illnesses.
Tip: Look out for the Defaqto star rating of the policy that you buy as a good indicator of the quality of the cover. Each policy will be awarded a rating out of 5; 1 being the worst (some bank policies only have a 1 start rating!) through to 5 being the best, most comprehensive policy.
