Aegon highlight skin cancer stats

At the height of summer during a particularly warm period in the UK, provider Aegon is highlighting the importance of taking care in the sun after revealing their claim stats for 2017.

Of all their critical illness claims in 2017, cancer accounted for two thirds, with skin cancer causing 8% of these claims. Aegon paid out a total of £2.3m in skin cancer critical illness claims in 2017, with the youngest claimant being only 33 years old.

With record levels of sunshine this summer, Aegon is eager to emphasise the importance of not just taking care of your skin, but spotting early warning signs of skin cancer. If people are able to identify these early, then they will be able to seek medical assistance at an early stage.

Dangerous levels of sun exposure is by far the leading cause of skin cancer in the UK, and providers are pushing for more campaigns around skin protection, especially after a survey revealed that one in four people still do not use sun tan lotion at all.
