Aegon raise awareness of Organ Donation Week
16th September, 2016
Leading provider Aegon UK have highlighted the urgent need for more organ donors as part of their backing of Organ Donation Week, which ran from the 5th to the 11th September. The insurer promoted the event, not least because of the importance of raising awareness of organ donation to save lives.
As a provider of critical illness cover, Aegon is keen to highlight the relationship between their clients and organ donation. “We have several customers on the transplant waiting list”, said Stephen Crosbie, protection director at Aegon UK, “through their critical illness policies, we’ve been able to support them financially during this difficult time, but they desperately need to find a match – and the more organ donors that are available, the more likely this will be.”
As part of their critical illness policy, Aegon provides customers with cover for major organ transplants. But they also look after live donors, as they account for a lot of the donated organs. According to the NHS, living kidney transplants offer the best opportunity for success, due to their improved longevity and effectiveness for the recipient, something Aegon feel is worth protecting.
Aegon’s unique Donor Cover also recognises the impact that donating an organ can have on the donor, both financially and emotionally. They added the additional cover in June, to provide similar cover to both the recipient, and donor of the organ. “We take the subject of organ donation very seriously” said Mr Crosbie, “the medical knowledge to transplant organs already exists and it’s everyone’s job to promote this cause to save lives.”
