Are you a struggling sandwich carer?
13th November, 2019
The sandwich generation are those that find themselves looking after both their children and elderly relatives at the same time; a difficult situation that puts strain on both finances and mental health.
Wellbeing provider BHSF has surveyed those of the sandwich generation to find out how the extra pressures of care and responsibility are affecting their mental health.
Out of the 1000 people working at least 16 hours a week that were surveyed, nearly half (47%) admitted that juggling duties was having a negative impact on their mental wellbeing.
Women were the most likely to be a sandwich carer, and 52% said it had impacted their mental health. Those in London were unsurprisingly affected more, with as many as 58% feeling the strain.
There are currently 1.3 million sandwich carers and almost three quarters are working as well. Employers are therefore being asked to do more to help support those affected.
