Are you living with illness denial?

5th July, 2019

“It won’t happen to me”. One of the most common responses AIG received when surveying UK adults in a recent study. This is not surprising; many of us like to think worst case scenarios simply aren’t worth protecting against.

But no matter the chances of it happening, the financial impact it has on loved ones when it does cannot be denied.  AIG predicted that as many as three quarters of UK adults would struggle to cope financially if they were to be struck down by a critical illness.

The survey polled three thousand adults, and found that “illness denial” was worryingly common. 54% believed they would not suffer from cancer, stroke or heart disease, despite these being three major causes of death in the UK.

A third of those surveyed admitted that they would need the support of friends and family if they were to get into financial difficulty.  The results mean that UK adults in general are not financially protected, and helps explain the current UK protection gap of around £2trn.
