Are you part of the sandwich generation?
1st October, 2018
If you are facing the financial challenge of looking after both your children and elderly relatives, then you are part of what is being called ‘the sandwich generation’. Typically aged between 40-60 years, there are currently around 2.4 million people in the UK struggling to care for both older and younger generations at the same time.
Research from protection provider LV= has revealed that many in this situation are unaware and unprepared for possible financial shocks. The survey found that over half were concerned about the impact of a serious illness, and many worried about how their loved ones would cope on the event of their death.
The sandwich generation also struggle to save, with nearly two-thirds with less than £125 a month disposable income. Surprisingly, 10% believed that financial advice is only relevant to those on high incomes. But the industry is keen to highlight that anybody with financial obligations should seek financial advice as part of their plans.
