Breast Cancer still most common cause for critical illness claims
5th November, 2018Breast Cancer still most common cause for critical illness claims Aegon has released its claim statistics for 2017, with breast cancer unsurprisingly remaining the biggest cause for claims in the UK. Accounting for over a quarter of all cancer claims, and 15% of all claims, nearly £56m was paid out to over 700 women for breast cancer in the last ten years. Although the average age of claimants was 48, claims were made by women as young as 30, highlighting the importance of both early detection and early financial planning. Survival rates have also been climbing in recent years, making it even more essential to have financial support in place. It is often assumed that protection policies are simply there for financial pay out. But Aegon are keen to highlight their value-added services that offer emotional and practical help and advice. This is especially important during the initial period just after diagnosis, as claimants can often be at their most vulnerable and in need of support.
