Critical Illness Bulletin: Have you checked your policy lately?

Critical Illness Bulletin: Have you checked your policy lately?

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Critical illness provider Zurich has asked customers to check their policy, to make sure they are getting the most out of their cover and not missing out on valuable benefits. Director at Zurich Peter Hamilton said: "Breast cancer awareness month provides us with a valuable opportunity to remind customers to check their policies and make sure they're aware of what they can claim for.”

More than 20% of their critical illness claims during the first half of 2016 were made by customers with Breast Cancer. A shortfall in the number of claims for additional payments and benefits has sparked concern that awareness needs improving, to ensure customers are as supported as possible during a difficult time.

Cancer cases on the increase

A recent study from Cancer Research UK has suggested that if current trends continue, half a million cases of cancer will be diagnosed every year in the UK by just 2035. At the moment, more than 352,000 people are diagnosed every year, which means an annual increase of 150,000 in two decades.

Sir Harpal Kumar, chief executive at Cancer Research UK, highlighted the need to increase awareness, as well as treatment and care: "These numbers are shocking. We know four in 10 cancers in the UK could be prevented". More providers are proactively supporting customers in staying healthy and in some cases, offering rewards and discounts for policyholders as an incentive.

Royal London improve critical illness cover

In a big month for critical illness cover, provider Royal London has also enhanced its own critical illness policy. The main change from Royal London has been to their cancer cover, which now covers over 60 early stage cancers under nine definitions. The provider said: “the changes provide clarity for advisers and customers by removing a long list of specified cancers."

Critical illness cover is becoming more prevalent every day in the UK. As a result of advances in medicine, treatment and care, more people are surviving cancer for longer. The peace of mind and support that the right policy delivers is something everyone deserves if the worst was to happen. Talk to us today or browse our quotes page to find out more.
