Do employers offer cancer support?

Employer cancer support may not be something you would consider, and a report from Unum has shown that 40% of 300 employees with cancer had no idea about the resources available until after being diagnosed.

More than half felt they could have returned to work much quicker with better support from their employer. Worryingly, nearly a third found that they did not receive any support at all, or that the support they did receive fell well below their expectations.

The biggest concern for employees with cancer was financial. A Macmillan report showed that 400,000 UK cancer sufferers struggle to pay the bills. The Unum report also showed that 74% worry about costs and the impact being unable to work would have.

A critical illness policy pays a lump sum to help cover any loses of income and often provides support towards other related costs. On the back of the report, Unum has now improved its Group Critical Illness offering, adding a cancer pathway for employers and employees at no extra cost.
