Government consider increase in probate fees
An increase in probate fees is being considered that would affect many people financially.
Although originally proposed by David Cameron’s government, the current administration remains undecided as to whether to go forward with the increase to the cost of funerals during the current period of uncertainty.
If it goes ahead, experts predict it is likely to be met with backbench opposition and face a possible legal challenge. The current estimate is that the hike would mean that 98% of probate applicants would see an increase from the flat fee of £250 to as high as £4,000. If enacted, it is likely that those in the protection industry will be ideally placed to help those bereaved families immediately affected.
