Mental health a rising reason for absence

Mental health a rising reason for absence

Just over 3 in 10 workers in the UK miss work due to mental health, according to the latest figures from the NHS. More surprisingly, a study also revealed that under a quarter of managers has had the adequate training to deal with and discuss mental health with their employees.

Stigma still attaches itself to mental health, making employees reluctant to discuss it. People are still fearful of sharing their problems, in case they are treated differently, become the subject of office gossip, or even compromise their employment.

Other studies show that millennials, who by 2020 will be the largest workforce, suffer worst from depression. This is putting more pressure on employers to talk about mental health and place work place wellness at the centre of their business.
