The real cost of mental health

6th November, 2017

The real cost of mental health

A new government-commissioned report has found that both the stigma of mental health and the challenges associated with dealing with it, is costing UK employers as much as £42bn each year.

A large portion of this cost was due to “presenteeism”. This is when individuals are less productive at work after spending more time there than is required. The study also found that 15% of employees currently have symptoms of mental health conditions and that over a quarter of a million people leave their job every year due to mental health issues.

This puts a cost on the state as well as employers, through the provision of benefits, the loss of tax and the burden put on the NHS.

This issue is exacerbated if the person suffering does not have a protection policy, such as income protection in place to cover them financially whilst they concentrate on getting better.
