UK life expectancy rate slows

Recent decades have seen the rate of life expectancy steadily increasing in the UK, due to advancements in medicine and improvements in general wellbeing for the elderly. But a recent report from the Office of National Statistics has revealed that the improvements to mortality rates have now slowed for those aged between 55 and 89 years.

More worrying is the figures for those aged 90 years and older, which has seen no improvement whatsoever since 2011. Due to increases in mental and behavioural disorders such as dementia for the elderly, more emphasis has been placed on the importance of looking after finances for those reaching older age.

Medical improvements for diseases such as cancer, has seen more people surviving and living longer. But this has also increased the chances of contracting dementia and other such illnesses affecting the elderly. Some experts suggest that mortality rates will improve again, once new advancements in treating dementia are found.
